Text transcript of this episode
Get ready for big changes on 5th and 6th avenues downtown! The Portland Mall Light Rail Project is making major renovations that will transform Portland's aging transit mall into a vibrant and inviting place for residents, commuters and shoppers.
Opening in 2009, TriMet's new MAX line to Clackamas County—the "Green Line"—will run the length of the Mall, connecting Union Station and Portland State University (the top transit destination downtown).
The I-205 segment will bring high-capacity transit service to Clackamas county, the third most populous county in the state.
After nearly 30 years in operation, the transit mall was ready for renovation. Streets and bricks were cracked, and maintenance costs were increasing. Soon, the Mall will be revitalized with refurbished streets and sidewalks, new transit shelters, better lighting and eye-catching public art.
In the spring of 2009, buses return to the Portland Mall. And MAX trains start rolling in September. Not only will our community benefit from better transit service, we'll all enjoy a beautiful and inviting public space to live, work, and play. The Portland Mall Light Rail Project is under way. It's The Next Big Thing Downtown.
